Janelia Theory Fellow Program

Janelia Theory Fellow Program

A program for early-career scientists with exceptional promise in mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering.

The Computation & Theory (C&T) group at Janelia invites applications for the newly created Janelia Theory Fellow program. Our group brings together expertise in computational and mathematical biology, machine vision and learning, and theoretical neuroscience. We tackle fundamental questions in biology by maximizing the insight extracted from biological data and closing the loop between theory and experiment.

The Theory Fellow program aims to attract early-career scientists with exceptional promise. Fellows are expected to think independently yet have a keen interest in contributing to the interdisciplinary research environment at Janelia. They will be mentored by one or more C&T group leaders, collaborate broadly within the C&T group, and have the opportunity to initiate collaborations with experimental groups, with the goal of testing their ideas by guiding the design and execution of new experiments.

Applicants with a strong quantitative background in mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering — including newly minted PhDs — are encouraged to apply. Appointments are made for a term of 3 years. Fellows are granted a generous computer and travel budget, access to state-of-the-art computational infrastructure, and a competitive salary and benefits. HHMI and Janelia have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.

We are now accepting applications for theory fellow positions at Janelia Research Campus.

Application review deadline: December 1, April 1, August 1.
