Theme 2 - Goal and Charge to Speakers

Return to 2015 MSM Consortium Agenda

Theme 2: Multiscale Modeling Implementation into Medical Simulators/Trainers

Goal: Share and discuss methods for developing and incorporating multiscale modeling into the advancement of medical simulators/simulation education trainers to advance medical education and clinical training.

Objectives: The speakers will address the Theme 2 Goal with the following four objectives:

  • Identify strategies required to successfully navigate barriers to incorporation of multiscale models into medical simulators/trainers or clinical training
  • Describe and illustrate key examples of computational methods used to bridge multiple scales in development of the models
  • Provide insight regarding the adoption of valid computational models by medical practitioners
  • Describe challenges that need to be pursued

Charge to the speakers, Theme 2:

  1. As an introduction to the presentation, clearly state:
    1. What medical procedure(s) or scenario(s) are being simulated for training purposes
    2. What are the specific multiscale modeling challenges of the problem being addressed
    3. What is the current status of translation of the modeling effort into this particular simulator or clinical training end-product.
  2. Briefly describe how and why modeling that traverses multiple scales (spatial, temporal or other definition) is required for success of simulator or clinical trainer implementation.
  3. Briefly describe the algorithmic approach incorporated into the functionality of the simulator or clinical trainer. Include technical details of computing platform, processing requirements, and optimization schemes.
  4. Outline your strategies for multiscale model validation in development of the clinical simulator/trainer.
  5. What are the challenges that need to be pursued?
