Topic: FDA Approval of "models"

Disscussion

Toxicology studies get highly vetted by EPA, OSHA and others. Decisions are made based on perception of best practice.

Everything nowadays being based on EBM (that's what you have to testify to in a malpractice suit) so seems like whether or not FDA approves there is use of the medical literature and could be similar use of published models.

Disscussion

We're often called upon to make our models into a simple GUI with a button that says "RUN" or better yet "PUBLISH" -- but resist this since are complicated models are full of assumptions that are then hidden in the background.

Topic: What do we need to do to establish credible models?

Return to 2012 Open Space/Unconference discussions

Discussion

We contribute to ModelDB (computational neuroscience) which has as measure of credibility peer-review publication -- the model that is posted must replicate a figure that was in the paper -- still weak credibility as is all peer-reviewed work. The model however then is available for further future peer review.

Allen Brain Atlas is a great resource for that organ.

For lung -- airway trees of individuals are quite different -- how do you create a normative lung. Micro-CT gets down to 50 mu; high-res machine at Iowa gets down to 2 mu but this is static imaging but lung is always moving -- also this is so much rad that couldn't do to human.
